Deep down, I’m a foodie. I’m as content watching sports as I am watching Anthony Bourdain shovel back foreign foods in a far off land.
So one of the first nights in Korea we were treated too Gamjatang (감자탕 if you ever see it on a menu), but we would call it Pork Spine Soup. Now generally I tend to limit the amount of vertebrae in my food, and I was honestly a little hesitant. As it turns out, Gamjatang originates from the province I’m in (Joella) which is also known for it’s food in general. So I know I’ll be getting the good stuff. Plus, Well, I’m not traveling to document the McDonalds of the world, so it’s bottoms up.
It’s incredibly tasty. The meat, marinating in the spicy flavorful soup as you work your way through, is so tender it almost falls off the bone. The soup is a smattering of spices and tastes that never gets dull. Yes, it isn’t what we’d have commonly back in the west, the idea of eating off of a spine is an odd proposition for us. That said though, a few weeks later we had it again, and I didn’t bat an eye, I dug right in.
