I arrived in Munich late evening, and keeping with tradition, I droped my bags off at the Hostel and went and got lost, finding a choir out front the Munich City Hall as well as an…Apple Store, which sort of took away from the Gothic style churches 😉 .
After taking a tour in the morning through the city, I met up with some new grad Americans (engineers too) and went on a Beer Appreciation Tour, tasting local beers from famous breweris like the Hofbräuhaus. Beers in Europe were very bitter, but the ones in Munich brought it too a whole new level.
Dachau
When I was in grade 11, I went with a marching band to France for the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. I spent about a week in Courseulles-sur-Mer, it was incredibly humbling and interesting too see where history happened.
When I was in Munich, I was told about Dachau, which was one of the first concentration camps the Nazi’s opened in the 1930’s. I knew it would be a somber day, but walking through there and hearing what happened there was beyond eye opening and heart breaking. I was left speechless and sick to my stomach leaving there at the end of the day, but if you find your self in Munich, it wouldn’t be right not too take the trip out of town to see this.
