After freezing my own stones off at the stone park, I had to book it back to the hostel, pick up my pack, and find the bus too Seogwipo (So – Gwi – Po…. It took me half the trip to learn how to pronounce this one), where I’d be spending the next day.
Maybe it was only a trick of timing with the weather, but it felt like finding a whole new side to the island after arriving in Seogwipo. The drive was straight south right past the base of Hallasan I’d been a few days prior. The road was winding through the mountains; I started talking to the only other westerner on the bus, an American, and after a while I was pulled right back to Vermont or Maine until I had to remind myself of where I actually was. After barely an hour of twisting and turning, the whole drive opened up over looking the Harbor town, just as the sun was setting.
I jumped off the bus a few stops early, and decided to walk the last few kilometers to check out the coast as the sun set across the yellow sea. A romantic idea, had my hostel not been up a set of switch backs that felt like I was climbing back up that mountain.
After checking into my guesthouse, I wandered and perused around, playing tourist for the evening seeing what I could see, and deciding on what I’d want to see the following day. I saw a crowd of people walking into a wooded path. Convinced to always follow a crowd, and after a 200 m walk along the river, I quickly came up on the water falls.
After getting my fill, and deciding that this was more of a ‘see during the day’ sort of thing, I wandered further down the docks. A large pier structure that resembled the famous hotel in Dubai straddled a broad bridge linking a small isle maybe 100 m off the coast. The lights and music were wonderful, even if it just Clare De Lune and a Korean trot song on repeat continually.
The coast was so nice the night before, the next morning I decided to be up at sunrise and see the same area’s I’d check out in the dark. The small island provides a trail you can take that circles the little isle, and doing so as the sun came up gave some really spectacular views.
From there, I bounced back up to the waterfalls, after a quick recap, I grabbed my bags and headed out to the one other thing that was having me on this end of the island.
As always you can find all of the pictures over at Flickr.
